Our social media cover stars: Heather and Kevin at HedKed Handicrafts

Run by husband-and-wife team Heather and Kevin, Durham market trader HedKed Handicrafts specialises in handmade and bespoke wooden items.

Durham is fortunate to have such a wonderful market heritage – and it’s something that we celebrate a lot through the Indie Durham City project.

There’s the characterful indoor Market Hall, of course, which has traded continuously for over 170 years, and features an always evolving collection of fantastic independent traders – several of which have featured as previous cover stars!

Equally as historic though is the weekly Saturday street market in Durham Market Place, and though they might arrive and pack away each week, the regular stallholders are just as much a part of Durham’s retail offer as the businesses that are based here all the time.

One of the favourite weekly stalls is HedKed Handicrafts, run by husband-and-wife team Heather and Kevin. Always a delight to browse, HedKed specialises in handmade and bespoke wooden items, with the stall’s enticing displays featuring everything from bowls, boxes and chopping boards to plaques, ornaments and Durham-themed gifts. The range is always changing, too – head over in the next few weeks, for example, and you’ll find various fun Halloween gift ideas!

Though their business is based outside the city, talk to Heather and Kevin and you’ll soon get a sense of how important being part of Durham Markets is to them.

And with their craftsmanship and quality of customer service, including many items that can be personalised to order, it’s no wonder that Kevin and Heather have built up a loyal following, and a swathe of five-star reviews from delighted purchasers.
