The team at Totally Locally Durham are working with partners across the city – including Durham Markets, Durham BID, City of Durham Parish Council, and ourselves at Indie Durham City – to promote the independent offering here in Durham.
How Totally Locally works
Totally Locally is an internationally recognised grassroots campaign adopted by cities, towns and villages. The concept is that, by working together, the independents in a location can have a very loud collective voice, and by encouraging locals to shop with those independent businesses, the entire local economy benefits.
There are so many benefits that independents offer consumers – including great customer service, great value, added value, and product knowledge. By promoting Durham’s independent businesses, rather than just promoting ourselves on our own, we can do more to educate shoppers so they know which independents can help them out with whatever they need, and where those independents are.
All it takes is a fiver
By the way, if every adult in Durham spent just £5 extra each week with independents in the city, instead of with nationals or big supermarkets, it would add £5 million per year into our local economy! That’s worth it, isn’t it?
That’s also the principle behind Fiver Fest – a national celebration of the power of spending just £5 with a local indie – which we’ll be telling you much more about later in June.
